Is the St. George Defence Viable?

Many of us know the amazing game of Karpov vs Miles. It is also known as "The Flawed Game" since Miles responed 1. e4 with an intresting defence: The St. George defence or 1... a6.

The game can be found here: http://www.chess.com/games/view?id=305943

But is the opening really viable? Most games do involve a6, but much later in the game. The opening allows Black to develop his pieces more and get an ideal center with 2. d4. But still, we can see from this game that Miles won... So is the opening really something that can be played?

**GROAN** Not this again..I am sorry mate but can I suggest to avoid FiveofSwords bogging your thread up with his computer assisted myopic dogmic drivel on the subject (and if he's not posted something, he soon will), you should do a search of this board has a whole because there are number of very good threads on the subject

One other thing, Karpov v Miles is flawed. if one plays as black Nf6 before e6 then Ng5 is possible for White

Have a good one

I remember one game played on this website that was unusually one sided in my favor. I checked and turns out that my opponent used this St. George opening.

For some reason my annotations aren't showing up in the game sequence below... I missed a simple mate by move 25, I think.

This is not viable in any way. Maybe in blitz you can survive.

22. Qxg5 might help black.  play it, it's viable; you have to find your own lines because nobody usually dares.  Pretentious snobs will tell you it's not; don't listen.

Or maybe the patzer that posted above just have to realise that he is a patzer and fail to take advantage of this horrible move

1.b4 e5 2.a3 is just barely viable for White -- there's a 1900-player losing every single game he plays with it on FICGS, where engine use is allowed.  Here's my victory; at the end Stockfish6 and Komodo9.2, at depth of 30 give or take, assess the position as about -5.0 in Blacks favor due to the rooklift ...Re6 in a couple of variations:

Of course the above is just one game and therefore anecdotal.  Nevertheless, 1.e4 a6 with a tempo less is obviously even worse.

a6 is illogical because it does not develop. but often in chess illogical moves could still be playable if you continue in a very accurate way. white cannot force a win against a6 but he can obviously force a significant lead in development and this makes the position difficult for black. the only reason a strong player such as miles would play this is because he wants to avoid whites superior opening preperation. and if he wins a single game it means nothing...you cant determine a general trend from one game. karpov actually obtained a big advatage in that game out of the opening but miles managed to outplay him after. a fluke probably.

And......I rest my case.
