Play the goring gambit, you might be pleasantly surprised.
Italian Makes Me Sick

I think Fischer was many things, but crazy isnt one of them. Spassky knew him very well and said he wasnt crazy, I believe Spassky. I think he was paranoid , and in his last years he was bitter and full of hate, but not crazy.
Well, that depends what your definition of crazy is. Does one have to be yelling that the clouds are sleeping viciously to be called crazy? I don't think so. There are varying degrees of mental health problems. The degree of Fischer's problems can be debated, but he clearly had some.

i was being a little dramatic for effect when i said fischers crazy...but i do have a degree in psych. I have, for many years, worked in the field, hands on, with MI and MRDD populations and in my perfessional opinion (and it is ONLY an opinion) fischer had a mental illness. im not sure how well spassky knew fischer, especially in the later years after the illness progressed... and like i said i was being dramatic, i have nothing but respect for Fichers and how he was, in some ways, back in the day. As a chess player he makes my top 5 ever (depending on my mood ill rank him 2-4 with Kasparov as #1). I just wish we could have enjoyed 30 more years of his chess. he left us to early. back to the postin, alternatives to the italian game, 1.e4 e5 2.nf3 nc6 3.c3 nf6 4.bd3 bc5 is kind of a fun open game with the idea of making almost a ruy structure with the bishop on c2, pawns on c3, d4, e4 and h3, king rook on e1, queen knight on f1

I don't vary alot with openings, at my level of play they're less important for me to know than Middle Game, End Game. So I play the aforementioned Italian Game, because I know five or six lines, and can usually react to my opponent well if they play 1. E5. I don't see any reason for me to memorize 10 different openings at this point. If I can get out of the opening by following basic guidelines, then it's up to me to win the game in the middle game, and end.

Try the Evans Gambit.
What a silly suggestion. The Evans Gambit is a variation of the aforementioned, loathed opening.
If the OP is complaining about the Italian game being boring and stale, it's a pretty safe bet he's not playing the Evans Gambit. Probably something like the Guioco Pianissimo.
I'm a Spanish player myself, it's my favorite opening. Even so, it sounds like the Evans Gambit is exactly what he's looking for. King's Gambit is also a good suggestion.

Sure, Evans' Gambit would liven things up a bit, but there are plenty of lively openings. It seems silly to suggest a lively opening where he would have to walk through the moves he is sick of to get to it. I'm sure he is just as sick of the Two Knights and Hungarian and Evans' Gambit cannot be played against those. So, suggesting something like the Goring Gambit makes more sense to me.

How about the Evans Gambit... it's not far away from the Italian Game and does give the game an extra kick... :D Or, if you wanna completely change the way you play, I'd go for the King's Gambit... exciting chess all over the place! :D

Oh, a terrible misunderstanding has taken place!!!! I thought you were writing about the Italien language!!! I was going to weigh in with how i have studied German and like the scientific structure of the language and the sound of it...I find the separable verbs difficult but amusing...I haven't studied Italien, but i have studied some Spanish, In general i like the sounds of the so called "romance" languages (which includes Italian)....But then i realized you meant the "Italian opening" sorry about the misunderstanding...try the King's Indian attack for a really wild ride .....Look at Fischer's games using it....Just thinking outloud here....

Kissinger, I apologize for the misunderstanding! I was actually talking about Clint Eastwood movies.
Play either the Danish or Goring Gambit if you play e4--both are sound and fun to play. As Black against 1. e4 d5 is a good move that help control the game and limits White's responses.
