ITT: we're sicilians and we laugh at the alapin

Your cute attempt to avoid the mighty Najdorf or the razor-sharp Dragon just makes us laugh. Every sicilian player is happy to see white giving up his opening advantage.

Oh, the only annoying thing is the boring positions where black has few winning chances. So, fellow sicilian players, let's post some lines to spicy things up:

My only game against the 4...g6 line:

That said, I don't think it's a bad line - far from it. And certainly more interesting than the usual crap that stems from 2...d5, which normally feels like the Scandinavian and is just as boring. Anyway, the boring stuff prompted me to switch to the Open Sicilian as of late, so that's 1-0 for boring lines I guess!

Fear_ItseIf

personally i prefer the 2..nf6 lines

Thanks.

In your game it seems black would have been perfectly fine if he did simply 14.0-0. I would say black lost tactically, even if of course this still makes the point that these lines are really dangerous for black. Perhaps that explains the lack of popularity.

The book I'm taking my lines from (Ftacnik) recommends to always play the Queen back to d8, saying that this move scored better than the "seemingly active" Qa5. I didn't like your opponent's trading queens...even if the engine tells me it's ok, my personal feeling is that black has a harder position to play without queens (tell me if I'm wrong).

I know the database results have to be taken with a pinch (a lot) of salt, but the 4...g6 lines have EXCELLENT scores:

A most informative thread, thank you.  GM Kaidanov's video convinced me to give the Alapin a shot; now I'm not so sure.....

I didn't like Kaidanov's series. First of all he gives for granted that everybody likes to play with an IQP.

I hate the IQP, so I'm choosing these lines particularly because I want the chance to play against it.

Second, his miniseries mentioned only the most common responses, without even conceding the fact that there are other stuff black can throw at you.

Before adopting the lines in this thread (that to be honest I still didn't use in a serious tournament game) I was playing the 2...d6. Again a rare variation that most alapin players have never seen, and yet extremely solid. I played that and goodbye white's opening advantage. The only problem is that white can trade down everything if he wants to, so many games ended up being dull and equal, that's why I want to try the 4...g6 lines.

Anyway, I asked Kaidanov to talk even about the 2...d6 lines in the comments to the first video and he didn't do it.

You've been challenged: http://www.chess.com/echess/view_game_seek?id=34319534  I've been class A USCF over the board and got a postal rating over 2000 25 years ago (before computers) but that probably only scares somebody with a big mouth who can't back it up -- am I right?

^ man, it's a light hearted thread. Try to have a sense of humour, it's good for your health.

Challenge denied by the way. I play chess to have a good time with my friends, not to settle disputes.

The only thing lamer than a troll is a troll who's a coward.  Anyway it's your loss because I play some lines against 2...d5 that it could have benefited you to know about.

TitanCG

I sincerely hope you aren't taking this thread personally.

Then post them or get lost.

Stop attention-whoring in my thread.

I am currently 5-0 playing as white in correspondence chess playing the alapin. It is clearly the refutation to the Sicilian.

Every chess master knows that symetrical openings are the only good opening.

If you are old enough to have played postal chess 25 years ago, then you are old enough to not act like this...

Kasparov, Karpov, Fischer, Spassky, Petrosian, Botvinnik, etc. All of them plays asymetrical openings and of course also play simetrical openings. The asymetrical openings are good without any doubts.

The Alapin is a reasonable choice, Tiviakov and David Howell use this as the main weapon against the sicilian but is not a refutation of sicilian, the refutation of sicilian doesn't exist.

PD: For the people that Laugh at the Sicilian Alapin. Understimate the enemy is the first step to a game disaster.

You should understand that my post and the original post were not meant to be taken seriously.
