Jan Gustafsson 1.e4 e5 FritzTrainer

So, lately I've been working on my opening repertoire with Black, and I've started answering 1.e4 with 1...e5. So far I've mostly been using "Play the Open Games As Black" by John Emms, and "Play 1.e4 e5" by Nigel Davies, but I've been looking for something a little more recent, and something other than "Play 1.e4 e5" to use as a reference for the Ruy Lopez (the former book doesn't cover the RL, and the latter I didn't like so much (resembles a database dump, with many variations with little explanation, and without an easy-to-read GM format)) Recently, I stumbled across GM Gustafsson's Fritz Trainers, http://www.chessbase-shop.com/en/products/5859 which detail a complete 1.e4 e5 repertoire for Black. My question to anyone who owns this DVD or has an opinion from reading the product description is : Is it suitable for a 1900-2000 player, or is it intended for a higher rated audience? Should I consider buying it? All opinions are welcome!

Mr. Monokroussos recommends it to anyone 1800+

Thanks for the help, I think I will get the DVDs :)

I have the dvd's and they are very very good and i highly recommand them. The only important choice you have to make is if you want to play the Marshall (Yes = buy both, No = buy the second dvd only)

Mainline_Novelty

Does it have good coverage of the 8.h3 Anti-Marshall move order as well? I'm honestly not sure yet about whether I want to play the Marshall OTB, but if it recommends 8...d6 against 8.h3, I'd also be prepared to meet 8.c3 with 8...d6? I'm not sure...

I only have the second volume (non-Spanish lines) and I think its one of the better DVDs from Chessbase. He's engaging and fun, and pretty honest with assessments. You will (obviously) need more database work to make the lines work OTB, but should be ok for 1800+ players. [Maybe except his line against the four knights, which requires significant work and memorization - I think its better to play the Capa variation (with Bb4) at lower levels.]

Mainline_Novelty

What line does he recommend against the 4 knights?

Grumblesmurf

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bb5 Nd4.

I happen to think that he's right that this is both the most effective and fun line, especially the bust of 5.Ba4, but given time, how often it comes up, and how precise the move order has to be, doesn't seem worth spending time on to me.

Ah, I see. I've actually already learned this line from Emms" book, so I honestly wouldn't really mind learning updated theory on it....unless of course there's been a crazy amount of new developments in that line...(has there been?)

This game was played by me only 2-3 weeks ago with normal time controls and shows how hard the c6 variation is to play with white (his rating was 2000ish). The analysis of Gusti goes right to Bf5 so only had to find a few accurate moves myself.

Nice game! Thanks for sharing that. I'm sticking with my Bb4 lines OTB though...

Aha...the lines I've learned are 5...c6!?...but these lines look more fun.

Okay soo as a guy with a free course on the ruy lopez, I can throw theory at you but every ruy lopez player has a different way to play the ruy lopez, There is no agreed upon "Mainline" Past move 11.
