I'm playing as white and opened with king pawn to E4, my opponent responded queen's pawn to D5.  Never seen this play before anyone have any suggestions/insight?  thanks.

1.e4 d5 is the scandinavian defence.

Play 2.exd5 and you will obtain a slight advantage. search on wikipedia for some guide lines.

If you are looking for fun, try the tennison gambit with 2.Sf3

Hi QuikChek--you'll also see it listed as the Center Counter Defense.  It fell out of favor for a long time because the natural assumption was that a game would go 1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Qxd5 3. Nc3, when black simply loses time moving his queen again.  It's picked up steam again lately though, and you'll even see it in master games.  The retreat with 3...Qd8 isn't as bad as it looks and 3...Qa5 is also playable.  Another option is 2...Nf6 instead of recapturing the pawn; the only way white can stop 3...Nxd5 is with 3. c4? and that error gives too many weaknesses in the form of lagging development, backwards pawns, etc. to make it worthwhile.  Generally the opening leads to middlegames where white claims more space with a pawn on d4, but black maintains control of d5 with c6/e6 pawns.  This is similar to the Caro-Kann, another unaggressive but solid opening.  From white's perspective 2. exd5 is absolutely the best move, followed by 3. Nc3 against either 2...Qxd5 or 2...Nf6.  d4 is your natural expansion in the center, the f1 bishop often goes to c4, and the other bishop might go to g5 to attack an f6 knight.  You can also play Bd2 against the Qa5 line, setting up a discovered attack against black's queen.  In general you can castle on either side, leading to a comfortable middlegame.

A good and simple way to play for white is 2 exd5 and 3 d4. The idea is to omit Nc3 in order to obtain a c4-d4 pawn center. White simply develops with Nf3, Be2, Be3, c4, and Nbd2/c3.

Actually 3 c4 is fine for White.  Just don't accept the Kadas Gambit: 1 e4 d5 2 exd5 Nf6 3 c4 c6.  Don't play 4 dxc6.  Instead, White should develop with things like Nc3 and d4, reaching a Panov Caro-Kann by transposition.

Yeah it's fine, but I'd rather not be on the White side of the Icelandic Gambit (3...e6), even if it's supposed to be good for White...
