Hi people... Lion need your help.

Most of you will be familiar with the KID... Kings Indian Defence. Played by RJF, Kasparov and many other great players. My favourite opening... and one that lead to many great, beautiful games? Apart from one major problem... is very difficult to play and learn, yes? So feel free to use this forum for most anything KID... variations, discussion, great games, personal games... whatever you like?!

Feed the Lion.

LIONSHAPEDBOX

Maybe somebody could show one of the following...

Classical, Saemisch, Petrosian, Gligoric, Fianchetto variation?

As a gesture of goodwill... woollensock and some others are unblocked.

josephyossi

dont try KID use as back up if grunfeld does not work

LIONSHAPEDBOX

But Grunfel is boring and drawish, yes?

Congrats to Liverpool btw.

josephyossi

No disrespect to Spurs... but i wanted Ajax v Liverpool, two teams from same country is not quite the same... felt like a premier league match.

Here's a game I played as Black in an Over-The-Board tournament in Ottawa, Canada back around 1990. It was a last-round, must-win game against a (then) higher-rated opponent. Not a perfect game by any means, but exciting.

LIONSHAPEDBOX

@bluemu... great game dude, and commentary... thx for that. So bg5 is Averbakh... if i remember right. Met by h pawn followed by c pawn break, Benoni style... just the sort of thing we needing. So one variation explained.... only 40 something to go?!

Sure the high IQ dudes have some KID classics...

blueemu

Here's another, played on this site, against a player who out-rated me at that time (2080 to my 2029). It is in a different line of the KID, the Classical Fianchetto line. I replied with the Panno...

Really, if u want information on openings, just open books!

They are also some good articles and video series on chess.com.

Video need diamond membership, not articles.

Why asking here when u have professionals which can help u and will give u all informations about move orders, ideas, etc...

This opening is too complex to be summarize with games or some thoughts.

U ask too much, forum can be good and effective only on specific questions (with short answers), not generalities.

Indeed, I think books are one of the best, if not the best way to learn about openings.

If you want to have a safe position with a space advantage(or even space equality) where you can rest on your laurels, the KID is definitely not the way to go!

The King’s Indian is one of those openings which I feel shouldn’t be played with a “mechanical” (?) spirit. It takes time and practice to become comfortable in the typical positions. From what I’ve read, one should be a kind of romantic player to be happy with playing the KID traditionally - leaving material aside in search for the initiative and giving white a clear spatial advantage, which often leads to “easier” moves to find for the white side. You must understand when and how you have dynamic compensation. Along with this, you must have tactical acumen for you to prove your advantage when you have it.

White has a myriad of setups against the KID and for each setup white adopts, black has many ways to approach the game. I highly recommend Bologan’s book on the King’s Indian. Bokjov’s work is really good stuff too. Don’t forget to keep playing the KID not just for a win, but for a fun experience as well!

Grunfeld defense is not boring. In fact, I try to avoid it as much as possible.

Viktor Bologan has 2 great books on it

Of course Book is best way to intensive study an opening... but this is not just for Lion... for anybody who love KID or want to play. Many members will struggle to afford or obtain such Book, and beside... the two example games by bluemu, with comment are excellent, real player, real games. Also if anybody have favourite KID master game, a game they played... or want to discuss, say, Kazakh or Uzbek variation? Most anything KID is welcome.

And the fact is such a complex opening is good... more to discuss.

blueemu

Both Bronstein and Fischer have played some excellent games in the KID. Kasparov, as well, IIRC.

Lion cannot... but stronger player can say? And perhap tell us why the Saemich is much less popular, apparently... at one point was the main way to defeat the KID?

blueemu

GM Uhlmann (a 2500+ player) has played 9. ... c5 at least four times.

It is much less common than 9. ... Nd7 or 9. ... Ne8, and the data-base of games shows a 19% winning percentage for Black (vs 50% for White, the rest draws) as opposed to 30% wins for Black (vs 42% for White, the rest draws) for the alternative 9. ... Nd7.

So it seems to be a difficult line for Black according to tournament praxis.

In the above game, White's 12. a4 looked suspect to me. White's chances lie on the Q-side, so he should have no objection to seeing that side of the board come open. I would have probably ignored Black's possibility of ... b5 and played Rb1 (intending b4) instead of defending with a4.

There is a gambit line for Black (involving ... c5) that seems to have taken most of the winning chances out of the Saemish. As far as I know.

LIONSHAPEDBOX

Dare i say... the UCL final showed the glaring flaw with that tournament... neither side were actual champions of their domestic league? Huge anti climax...

LIONSHAPEDBOX

Anyway thanks again @bluemu... your games and commentary are excellent. What to do against the Petrosian version... where White locks the middle?
