King's Indian Defense

Hello gang!  I recently switched from a Dutch hybrid opening for black to the King's Indian defense.  I was just wondering if anyone knows of a good book on the King's Indian defense?  There are a lot of books out there, and I feel like I am going a little blind by simply reading the Amazon reviews.

Also, if anyone knows any other resources to help learn the lines/common tactics I would sure appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks

King's Indian Warfare.

It is not a repertoire or reams of theory.  It is grouped by theme.  What to do with the Bad Bishop on g7, typical sacrifices, typical endgames, the author's 4 games against the King's Indian Killer - Kramnik - where he scored 2.5, etc.

You will get more out of that than some book on theory.

When you complete that book, subscribe to section 9 of chesspublishing.com and go through the monthly updates.  I only recommend that site for openings you know well, like I am subscribed to the French section.  It is not the place to learn an opening for the first time.

On top of ThrillerFan's recommendation (which I think should be read first!) here are some books you might want to look at in the future:

Modernized: The King's Indian Defense by Dejan Bojkov - This book recommends a different approach from what most would consider traditional King's Indian. For instance, exd4 in the Classical Variation instead of Nc6.

Bologan's King's Indian: A Modern Repertoire for Black by Victor Bologan - More "traditional" romantic approach to the KID according to how Bologan views the opening, wide range of content covering the Mar del Plata, the other major systems (Fianchetto, Averbakh etc.) as well as several other white set ups including the London system, Torre attack and even the KID against 1.c4.

The Bologan book is very good, but might be heavy going for someone dipping their toe in the water.

Starting out in the King’s Indian by Joe Gallagher is a really good intro to the opening, also very good if you can get it, Mastering the King’s Indian by Bellin and Ponzetto. The chapters in the Bellin book are grouped by themes.

Neither book is a totally complete repertoire of course - you’ll face plenty of Londons, Torres, Tromps Stonewalls and so on.

And in that case, you should get Yelena Dembo's Fighting the Anti-King's Indians
