but, if white does not want to cancel its Bishop with black's knight?

Dekker

i like the Spanish alot, i do as white:
3...a6 4.Bxc6 dxc6 5.h3 or also 5.d3 (depends at which mood i am =P)
3...Nf6 4.Bxc6 and 5.d3

as black i do 3...Nf6 and 3...Bc5

Kupov: You played incorrectly as black:

As white, I enjoy playing against the Berlin Defense:

The_Brain9

Kupov:

That is a beginner's mistake.

Benedictus:

Even if Black does play ...bxc6, he can still recapture the pawn:

nakafan

no with bxc6 u can hold pawn up nxc6 then qe2

JG27Pyth

Kupov, that variation of the Ruy Lopez is not seen very often ... but it hardly results in Black losing "a pawn for nothing," nor is it, as some others have suggested, a "beginner's mistake" -- Here's a game using your variation where Black, a women's IM, wins. (In my notes I refer to Black getting "his" material back... oops... her material back... and in the note to 16.h3!? I also neglect to point out that Nxf2! is a sac (there's no good way to get the N back out of there).

TheBrain9: Your idea was good, but instead of 6.Qe7 you could also do 6.Qg5! which i think is a little better. Still, as white first defend with d3, before taking at e5

JG27Pyth

Ah, I think I misunderstood... "beginner's mistake" referred to 5.Nxe5 and that's probably fair to say, although strong players occassionally try it, (I'm not sure why). Dekker is right IMO. 6...Qg5 is better than Qe7... but that whole line is bogus IMO because bxc6 is bogus. The correct move is dxc6.  bxc6 busts up Black's queenside pawns for no good reason. And as long as white doesn't play 5.Nxe5?! (0-0 or d4 are both good)  he's already got a better game.

Kupov

Come on guys I was kidding...

benedictus

Next time I will try to remember to check a person's rating before replying. Based on your rating (I just checked it now), I am fairly certain you were kidding.

Anyway, when playing against the classical variation, which move do you prefer and why?

Dekker

i´d like to play 3...Bc5, but then 4.c3 is played, which i don´t like, so therefore i´ll play 3...Nf6 faster!
