Lousy

Basman used to play some weird openings and win. So did Miles 1...a6 against Karpov when Karpov was in his prime. Miles did win that game.

As for me, my chess standard is so low that I can lose to any opening. I hope all my oppornents play 1. g4 2.f4 in all my games.

montevideo defense 1. d4 Nc6 2. d5 Nb8.  Beginner's trap and Mellow Hay trap show some promise

oops...thanks, that happens when u stay up late...gg

Scarblac

Some book publishers (like the ones that produce ECO) have tried to make catalogues of all openings. I think it's a bit too much to call them a list of "official openings" though.

master_in_panama

mm...well, maybe they're not official...but I was bored so you can actually also throw that topic to the trash...gg

Scarblac

No, it's a fun topic :-) I just need to point out stuff like that for some reason...

rrrttt
Benko opening. Lasker simul variation
master_in_panama

The benko does has some Idea, it would be to rip apart white's kingside ASAP.

DrizztD

I've played the Anderssen's. Not in serious games, but it is sorta fun when you feel like playing black.

Conquistador

The Canary Defence or Double Bird

1.d4 d5 2.f4 f5

master_in_panama

Never saw this one before, Conquiscador! But I'll guess the Idea is to grab as much center space as possible, thus it's sound...

Tnk64ChessCourse

The Irish (or Chicago) gambit!

Elroch

Never come across the nicely named "canary defense" before. The only example between master level players is Pedersen-Nielsen 1994, and that looks like a fake, as it was a "grandmaster draw" in 4 moves, probably prearranged, so the moves are irrelevant. Neither white's second move nor black's second move look that bad to me, despite their relative rarity, given that the game is likely to end up in a stonewall attack or a double stonewall, respectively. There are a few genuine master games starting with 1. d4 d5 2. f4, but it does not even merit a name in the Oxford companion to chess (1996) (still less the far rarer "canary").

As for the Chicago gambit, 1. e4 e5 Nf3 Nc6 Nxe5, its surprise value seems be inadequate, based on the 0-7 score it has achieved in my database. Smile

[P.S. concerning one of the lines in the original post, surely the correct moves for the Montevideo defense must be 1.d3 Nf6 2.d4 Ng8 3.d5, which reaches the required position. Smile Three other move sequences will also do!]

ArtNJ

Hippotomus Defense.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippopotamus_Defence

Maybe its not wierd enough, since it has (very very rarely) been played at the highest levels.

Elroch

Some of the recent examples are positively respectable by comparison with the offbeat early ones in this discussion!

tryst

You forgot: "Ladies and gentleman, the leader of the free world, the President of the United States." That's not only a weird opening, but it's kind of creepy.
