Minor Piece Sacrifice Gambits

Sort:
Nimzowitsch

Most Gambits in the Opening sacrifice a Pawn to gain an advantage, such as the famous Queen's Gambit:

However, 2 Gambits actually capture a Pawn, but sacrifice a Knight:

1. The Irish Gambit:

2. The Ponziani-Steinitz Gambit

I would also like to discuss the lines of the Traxler Counter-Attack:

Discuss these Gambits, including Theory and Merit. And if you know any other Gambits that involve the Sacrifice of a Minor Piece instead of a Pawn, please share here and add it to the discussion.

Muzio is the first that comes to mind:

Does anyone know any Theory for any of the posted Gambits and Openings?

don't forget the carokann caveman which sacks a rook in some lines!

you also forgot the krejcik alekhine: 1.e4 Nf6 2.Bc4 Nxe4 3.Bxf7+ which nabs the knight after queen checking. it's not the strongest line by far, but i just love grabbing castles.

i call minor piece gambits "can opener attacks". i just miniatured a 1704 with one as a lowly 1550...

1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Nf6 3. Nc3 e5 - i do not like getting forced into qxd5. it violates early queen moves theory, it's related to qxd5 which i quit in the 90s, and most important, i wastes tempos! as a gambiteer... NO!!!!

4. Bb5+ Nbd7 5. Bxd7+ Bxd7 6. Nge2 Bd6 7. O-O e4 8. h3 Ng4 so, you're trying to tell my knight nope? it's +5.5 bad maybe, but not in this game! a can opener attack... i prefer getting a 2nd pawn for 'em if i can (pun intended)

9. hxg4 Qh4 was planning for 10.g3 Qh3 with 11...Bxg4 & 12...Bf3 for a mate on g2 or just throwing everything at my opponent   ...Rf6 & Rh6

10. Ng3 Bxg4 11. Qe1 O-O 12. Qxe4 Rfe8 13. Qc4 Bxg3 14. fxg3 Qxg3 15. d3 Bh3 16. Rf2 Re1+ 17. Rf1 Qxg2#

my opponent got rattled or too caught up in his plans. this is my kind of game... ugly, unsound even, but fighting hard all the way to the finish line.

here's my novelty gambit

well, it's only -1.3, so there must be some compensation, but I'm at a loss to see any immediate lines of attack unless your idea is simply to open up the e file.

you forgot the TRIPLE muzio. that was to be my nomination for top 10 gambit moves... a THIRD gambit in a row with solid winning potential.

i've decided that at the amateur level, a pawn gambit is worth 1 point and a theoretical win if one is a grandmaster and plays perfectly, but at the amateur level, one can get 8-10% points in wins making initiative stronger than position. i just knocked a 1704 out in 17 moves because i think my initiative rattled him, or he just wasn't able to find the right defense

Don't forget the Cochrane Gambit - 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nxf7 Kxf7
