Most Common Traps

Hey guys! I was just wondering if anyone could give me a list of the opening traps which are played most often / where there is the chance to play them the most often. And I'm talking about stuff that gets you an advantage or checkmate (like Legal's mate), not a pawn advantage after 69 moves...

Baring in mind I'm only just over 1100 on here, they don't have to be too advanced.

Just wanna mug my friends of with these as they say :)

Cheers

anything that wins a significant advantage is going to rely on your opponent to make a mistake in the opening.   They literally take a specific sequence where both players follow an exact pattern.   For this reason none of them are really common .. because the victim learns pretty fast not to do whatever it was.  And trying to set up traps in most cases leads to an inferior position if your opponent is wise to your trickery.

The most common themes for picking on new players are forking the king and rook with a knight,  or better the king and queen,  or mating with the queen early, or knight mate on a smothered king.

You will do better if you just learn some theory and openings than trying to get your opponents to make specific mistakes.

I agree with jonnin, trappy chess is rarely good chess. Most beginners will violate basic chess principles early on. Like moving the same piece twice, early queen adventures, etc. Your job is to not make these same mistakes and learn how to exploit your opponent's errors.

There is no quick alternative to serious study of the game. I'd suggest buying a beginning chess book or two and take it from there.

I hope this helps.

Here's an opening trap that you can use when playing the Queen's Gambit accepted. If not familiar with it, it's easy for black to fall into while trying to hold onto the extra pawn.

I think the best advice is along what the other posters have already said. Pick a solid opening that works well with your style (if you love tactics, choose an open game, like maybe an 1. e4 opening, but if you prefer a more positional quiet game, choose a closed game with 1. d4). Then, study and practice that opening, including any opening traps that go along with it. You will be able to play solid chess, but also punish players that are not familiar with the intricacies.

You know what REALLY helps at 1000 rating and below.  works far better than any traps, happens ALL the time, and is something you can work that will boost your rating considerably?

TAKE FREE pawns and peices!  can't tell you HOW many games I have seen where one side had a whole peice or he could take and he doesn't.

oc, nothing in chess is THAT strait forward and sometimes tactics and free peices are BAD moves.  but you Don't Know that if you don't even see the move....

Yeah, I know what you mean. I don't mean to rely on these or anything, just wanna know a few. It's just that moment when I checkmated my friend wit Legal's mate and he threw the iPad we were playing on across the room 😂

thegreat_patzer

well, I can't fault you for being curious.  and there's some clever ones.  good luck in the hunting...

I like traps and consider them a fundamental learning tool.  Here's a grouping of traps, named and otherwise, I had put together a couple years ago:

Nice collection BG.

Ill add one in memory of Ackbar (RIP).

The center counter defense (aka scandinavian),  a rookie while player will try to keep that pawn.  When they do, this invariably leads to a serious advantage for black.  There are different things white will try.  Rather than try to list all the variations,  I will just encourage you to try this simple opening.  If you can learn a few lines for it, you will have a nasty trick for your friends next time you play.

Wow, thanks Batgirl! That was exactly what I was looking for.

This is one of the traps in the Queen’s Gambit Declined called the Elephant Trap.

Chess traps have always attracted the attention of chess fans. Not only they can get you quick wins but show fascinating chess ideas that catches the appreciation of spectators as well. The traps are thoroughly analysed which means you are not likely to commit a mistake when making that life sucking sacrifice.

But the problem with chess traps is that they require opponent to make some silly move which they are highly unlikely to make in a game. Blackburne Shilling Trap is one of my favourite traps because here the opponent is making his usual moves. A slight shift from the order of moves and he finds himself right in the middle of the trap which ends up with White falling to his knees.

So here is the trap.

Game begins with common Italian opening setting 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 . Now Black plays a dubious move 3... Nd4!? . White replies with 4. Nxe5?! This ambitious but obvious move lands White right where we want him to be. 4... Qg5! 5. Nxf7 . White continues with his attack without realizing that he is getting tangled in the net. 5... Qxg2 6. Rf1 . White has to protect his rook in order to prevent the subsequent check. 6... Qxe4+ 7. Be2 . White has to bring his bishop in the way in order to take the bullet. 7... Nf3# And a sweet smothered checkmate to end the game! 0-1

Traps are a real fun way to win games quickly and they especially come in handy in blitz and online games. But do keep in mind, the variations that come with the trap in case the opponent does not go along the way like you imagined!
