Multitool for Black

Is is fairly easy for the recreational patzer to fall for slogans like "to be used against anything" but maybe it works OK to play more or less the same thing against (almost) anything. Most stuff seems to be playable below master level after all....

What would you consider to be the "best" multitool for black?

The Hippo b6, Bg7 etc?? The Lion d6, Nf6, Nbd7??

1...d6 works against practically any opening so you can learn into that system.

d6 is not very good against d4 or e4. e6 is better. Will (hopefully) turn into the French Defence or QGD.

Lies in master play (or atleast olympiad level) the pirc has better records then the french.

Also the arguement isn't what is better it is an arguement of what is the best multitool for black. And seeing as many 1...d6 variations are infact stand alone systems this is a very wise choice if you only want to study one opening.

The Pirc/Modern lines are playable against anything. Just look at how many openings use d6 and g6: KID, Robatsch, Benoni, etc.

precisely it's an extremely flexible opening.

The Hippo is a sweet animal and I might stick to the mud. My handfull Hippo games have a more positional twist to them and I never made it as a poker player since I am not a grinder (and I have too much respect for money). Is there such a thing as a tactical Hippo?

I suggest any hypermodern system.  i guess the Hippo could be lumped into that category, kinda.  I always defend with 1...Nf6.  Vs e4 I go into Alekhine lines, vs d4 Into standard queen pawn lines or my fav the budapest gambit, and vs c4 you can go into standard english lines.  It is also the standard reply to 1.Nf3 and even against b4 it protects the g7 square from being attacked (the common 'trick').

It doesn't commit any piece to the center and basically asks the opponent,'What's next?'

I would say pirc/kings indian, is the most reliable opening system that can be played again most major openings.
