I only really play the ruy lopez as White but end up playing luck chess if my opposition does something I'm not used to. I usually just wing it when playing as black. Is there any solid basic openings I can learn. Sorry if this question has been asked loads

If the recent history of this forum is any indication, it's clearly getting Geet-pilled. ;) On a serious note, the Queen's Gambit has been my mainstay since childhood, and I recommend it.

Asnitte

I would like to recommend Italian game if you play 1.e4, and Queen's gambit if you play 1.d4. These two are the most basic openings.

As a black, when you face 1.e4 there are 4 main responses.
1...e5 (open game) : White and black fight for control of the center.
1...e6 (french defence) : Make a specific pawn chain in the center. It is good for learning how to play with pawn structure.
1...c6 (caro kann) : Very solid opening. It is hard for white to demolish black's solid position.
1...c5 (sicilian defence) : no.1 opening for masters. A lot of variations.

I don't recommend sicilian defence because it has huge amount of theory. Others are good.

Ruy Lopez generally has too much theory and is too complex for people below like 1600 I’ve heard. I suggest the Caro kann for black, very solid and pretty easy to learn. As white I play the queen’s gambit which is good at pretty much every level, but there are a lot of different openings that are fine at that level, like the Vienna and Italian and more, just find one you like the most

queens gambit as white is a good suggestion. You may as well play something tactical as black to work on both styles of chess, so for that reason I'd recommend e4/e5. Then against 1. d4 you could also play the queens gambit.

kingside_fianchetto

here's some general opening ideas based on your playstyle.

POSITIONAL:

white: play 1. d4. for me, i play 2. g3 because i just like it, but i recommend 2. c4 no matter what he plays (except 1. e5)

if you really want to play e4, play the italian giuoco piano, 3. Bc4 Bc5 followed by 4. c3

if they play the sicilian, do a macrozcy bind

black: against e4 play the caro-kann (1. c6 followed by 2. d5 no matter what) or 1. e5 followed by 2. Nf6 (the petrov)

against d4 play 1. f5 (my personal favorite), the dutch. the idea is to play Nf6, d6, g6, Bg7, castle kingside, Nbd7, and e5, for a slow buildup

TACTICAL:

white: play 1. e4

if they play 1. c5, play for a castle queenside for an attacking game

if they play 1. e5, play 2. d4 to blow the center up

black: against e4, play the sicilian dragon for an opposite side castling game

against d4, play the king's indian

BALANCED:

these openings work for everyone

white: london system (1. d4 d5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Bf4), four knights game (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 Nf6)

black: grünfeld (1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3/Nf3 d5), berlin (3. Nf6 on ruy lopez)

FUN:

i play these for fun

white: 1. b3, 1. g3

black: pirc defense, antal defense

"I only really play the ruy lopez as White" ++ Great

"playing luck chess if my opposition does something I'm not used to"
++ If your opponent does something you are not used to, then think.

"I usually just wing it when playing as black. Is there any solid basic openings I can learn."
++ Simplest and best is to defend 1 e4 e5 and 1 d4 d5 as black.

At the 1000 level openings aren't really the issue.

At our level (mine as well as yours) our only real task in the opening is to reach a middle-game position in which we feel comfortable and confident. Everything else is a matter of personal taste, or even fashion.

What worked for me (when trying to get past this rating) was playing the scotch gambit. It may be a bit to hard for you (there are a few lines you would have to remember) but its nice and aggressive and 99% of your opponents (especially at your rating) will never have seen it before!

I don't know what you should play as black but I play petrov's defense (tho I am about 600 points higher rated than you)

I use a website called chessbook to organise my openings andI found it was very useful (especially as you improve)

Do the italian opening if you are against 800 players they might play Nf6 and then do the knight attack if they stop it with d5 then capture and if they capture back you can sacrifice your knight as a brilliant move. This is known as the fried liver attack (eww) or the feggatello attack (sounds better). Look at this please!

that can boost your elo from 500 to 1000

Usually, learning main counters to white's play as black helped me to not play random moves, atleast for the 800-1000 level

For kings pawn , learn against the Italian, Ruy lopez, Scotch and Caro kann

For queens pawn, learn against queens gambit and the london.

For the rest, just use opening principles, develop all pieces and castle quickly, and think before you act.

Chessable can really help, if you know to choose the right course.

At your level, you can play any opening. You should concentrate on learning general principles rather than a specific opening.
