You should be getting books specifically on your opening choice. MCO is too advanced for 1428 assuming that's a good representation of your strength. The "Starting Out" or "play the" series by Everyman Chess are brilliant for all openings you could possibly want to play. I've got 4 opening books from Everyman Chess, and I've only just had to move onto more advanced material for my Caro-Kann repertoire with the grandmaster repertoire series.
Which opening book is the best? I have MCO 15, which is ok, but not as helpful as I would like. Are there any books that explain the opening, and give major variations, but not every line?
Or... should I just get books on the openings I use? I don't really have a good repertoire...I'm thinking of starting an entirely new one. Any suggestions?
PS: in my repertoire I have to have a "pet" opening...something unusual or off-beat that I can use once in a while or for speed chess.
Thanks
