opening e4 a5 ???

what white opening starts with e4 a5 ?...
And a possibly next is knight c3 (to defend those pawns)
- Or pawn g3, and get a bishop behind it.
- Or d4
- Or b4

me as blacks responding Bishop b5 seamed to end this attack (oponent paused for quite a while) (white cant advance white rook to a4, or play d4)

I wouldnt think this is an opening, but i played it twice today, the chance of such a game start is by itself almost nihil, me playing black having it twice against stronger players in a day makes me wonder is it an opening i'm not aware of ?

It's known by at least three names, the Ware Defense, "Corn Stalks", or the Snagkeouss Defense.  The Snagkeouss is slightly more detailed, with the extra move:

1.e4 a5  2.d4 Nc6

(- taken from Bill Wall's "ECO codes with names", http://www.geocities.com/siliconvalley/lab/7378/eco.htm)

Why is it listed in the opening explorer as the most common master response?

Bug.

Bruki

after 1)e4,1)...a5 is unhelpful, instead to think to develop his pieces black pushes this pawn.Only advantage of 1)...a5 is that for white after this strange move every result different from a win is a lost.

How many other bugs are there in the Opening Explorer? That is worrying!

Just play 2.d4 and control the center

1...a5 does not have much sense
