Hi Everyone,

I would like to know if there is an opening for Black which can be used against a lot of the well-known white openings.

Thanks

No

You mean only one opening, you can use against everything?

Becouse most peaple have a opening against 1. e4 and one against 1. d4.

You can play the Pirc against both e4 and d4,

1. e4 d6

2. d4

or

1. d4 d6

2. e4

give identical positions.

It's a good solid opening.  See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirc_Defence for variations.

If you're asking for a one-single move opening for Black in all the possible first move of White, my answer is "g7 or b7" fianchettoing the Bishop, it works against White's famous first moves (e4, d4, Nf3).

yes, because in Pirc and modern second white secon move is often d4, so transpositions are often. you can also try the French defence e6 as a universal defence to e4/d4,with comment that you should also learn Nimzo and Queen's indian for games where white go with (1.d4 2.c4)

Thanks a lot everyone. I'm trying to focus on only one opening for black and learn it thoroughly before moving on to any others so I'll try one of the recommended. :D

yes! aside from that, may I suggest this book..

of course, when White plays 1.g3 or 1.b3, Black can reply with the moves 1...b6 or 1...g6 because White fianchettoes his bishop first before black does, so 1...b6 or 1...g6 is out, when STRICTLY SPEAKING, as a single move reply against ALL OF WHITE's first moves.

for me, the book is good buy, primarily, Reti players will hate you because of it because of the move order 1.Nf3 d6!

1.c4 d6!

1.b4 d6!

1.g3 d6!

whoa.. nice. :D

Thanks a lot Optic nerve, but the problem is I'm not in the situation right now to buy a book so. :(

There is no 'best' opening or everyone would play it. Just play whatever one you like best.

@rohitsharda: Purely in terms of Grandmaster results,  the Sicilian is best. But for us mere mortals, choose whichever one you like best is my advice.

King's Indian Defense or a similar version of it.

thanks. i think yours is the best answer. in  both french and in caro-kann (panov botwinik attack) queen bishop gets struck. so i thought of taking some expert advice.
