Opening surprise

Well this weekend at a tournament, I ended up facing the Latvian Gambit.  Normally I know exactly what to do except it came from a different move order.

1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 f5?!

I generally play 2.Nf3 when I have seen the Latvian Gambit.  I had never faced this before in the Bishops Opening so I proceeded

3.Bxg8 Rxg8 4.Qh5+ g6 5.Qxh7 Rg7 6.Qh8 with a weird position.

6...Nc6 7.d3 f4 8.g3 d5 9.Nc3 Be6 10.gxf4 Qd7 11.Qh4 g5 12.fxg5 0-0-0

Now I am three pawns up, but my position is uncomfortable.

13.Qg3 Nd4 14.Kd1 dxe4 15.Nxe4 Bf5 16.f3?? Nxc2 and I lost 11 moves later.

So what does the community think?

i think "what does the community think" is an excellent album. one of my favorites by catpower.

in all seriousness:

3. Bxg8 was not a good move.
4. Qh5+ is bringing the Queen out way too early and doesn't really accomplish anything.
6. Qh6 is only working to trap your Queen in the corner.
Developing the c1 Bishop would have helped a lot.

I think you got your lines confused. The calabrese countergambit (what you faced) is a little bit different than the latvian gambit, but it's not exactly refuted the same way the latvian is. Normally in the latvian, Qh5+ leads to crazy lines (or a crushing victory for white if he's allowed to play exf5 first). Here, it's not so simple because you didn't take the gambit pawn first. Usually Qh5+ lines are aiming for ...g6 followed by Qxe5+ followed by Qxh8, but that doesn't really work here (because of the f pawn and because you gave up your bishop)

Looking at this website (http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~goeller/urusov/bishops/f5.htm), it looks like your best options are the safe 3.d3 Nf6 Nf3! or the crazy 3.f4! with much complication to ensue. Either way, you're in for a wild ride with gambits like these. Enjoy! lol

Thanks, I will look at the link.
