Opening to counter the Scotch
Isn't the haxo gambit made for white?
I am asking how to counter the Scotch gambit.

I think it's a black opening. It's called gambit because white can force you to give the pawn back

Dude white plays it and white gets a better position after b4 check because after Black trades his dark sqaured bishop white has more pawns controlling the dark and light squared in blacks territory

Altho Nf6 against the scotch gambit on the GM level is more popular. You can try it instead if you don't like the Haxo

play 2...,d6 go into a Phillidor and avoid all of it. if they play the Scotch all the time, take them out of their game and into yours.

Hi! This move order trasposed to the Italian Game. Play may continue quietly with 7. Bd2, Bd2, 8. Nbd2, d5 and black is fine, or with the Greco Move 7 Nc3 with complications.
Concerning how to play against the Scotch, Game I would suggest /play 4...Bc5 variation, because I find 4...Nc6, 5 Nc6, bc6 6. e5 a lot theoretical
Good luck!

it must feature advanced concepts that amateurs can't grasp because it has terrible stats 1600-2000
black is losing in all 3 main lines
I was curious because i still haven't found a DEFINITE anti-scotch line for when I switch to 1...e5 from the scandinavian, but the steinitz is playable
MUCH MUCH MUCH better stats for black! that, and only TWO main lines. WOW! it gets even JUICIER when you follow THE main line!
THERE'S your line, and by the looks of it, nine too someday!

Against the Scotch Gambit I'd play to not hold the pawn but to get in an equalizing d5 push. eg:
Against the Scotch Game I'd agree with maafernan and play the 4...Bc5 variation.

4.Bc4 appears much stronger than than the nearly 3x more popular 4.Nxd4 line
this line leads to rough equality at 46:49 after 8.Be3, but black really starts winning in the sidelines
following the main line, neither side seems to gain an advantage for the 1st 11 moves anyways. it looks like both sides need to play accurately, so I'm guessing the position is very double edged.
black is kicking butt in the 2nd most popular reply. 8.0-0
10.Ba6 scores 33:63 in 9,332 games at -0.5. I imagine the next most popular line has as good a refutation too, soooo, if white plays correctly, he can get equality, but if not, he can get into trouble quick like in these 3 final moves. logical looking 10...Rb8 is terrible for black for some reason at 58:37 in 2.9k games
After some research and looking at your comments i saw that there is no definitive counter against it and some variations I just don't like as going into the scotch in general is not good as the scotch has to many variations for me to definitively chose from. I reached the conclusion that not even giving a chance for the opponent to play the Scotch is the answer to my problems so as GK_chess_Master said that playing e5 is a bad idea so I decided to play the Sicilian defense instead as i am well versed in it. Thanks for your help guys as i found the solution to my problem, wish you all a good year.

Bro, you can't "counter" an opening(unless it breaks opening principles like the fried liver). You can only survive it
Is there an a good opening that gives an advantage when white plays the scotch in general or the scotch Gambit as people at my level play the scotch or the gambit variation of it and i have no idea what to do and even after following opening principles I keep losing to people who the gambit or the regular Scotch. Any suggestions please?
