Hello all.

I'm curious asto which of the openings are your favorite?

Also, why do you like it, and, how did you learn it?

My favorite is Ruy Lopez.I learned from book and from many games which I played.I learned a lot from mistakes.

I think it is very good opening for good positional players.

i like king's gambit for white.....Sicilian grand prix attack for black, i'm relatively new to chess, so i'm still in search of idea and repertoire.....

Im pretty sure this thread has already been created but its nice to reiterate and hear the voices of some new members!

Anyway, my favourite openings are The Budapest Gambit (defence) and the English Defence. I really like Open Sicilians too... like really really love them =)

My first teacher taught me the Budapest, he showed me the English Defence too and the open sicilians i just learn myself from playing games, reading a couple books. Oh! and i bought Kasparovs dvd on the Najdorf (one of them).

I like the Benoni, because it turns the checkered squares into colorful polka-dots, and the game into a three-ring circus.

im still working on my openings, im finding that aspect of the game a real challenge, which it is, but still, after some games i think, well, im getting pretty good at the ruy lopez, and a game later, im not past the 15 move.

It is the French.  No matter what opening I turn to against e4, I will always eventually dump it for the French.  I am a good defensive player, but love to counterattack.

I play ruy lopez mostly as white because it works for me but sicillians never seem to go my way and it doesn't matter if I'm playing it or my opponent is.

for d4 I usually play kings indian defence

my problem is that my middle game is awful and no oppening theory is gonna fix that.
