Although novel means new, "novelties" refers to things that are new. Assuming that a thing doesn't continue to be new indefinitely, there must be "new novelties" coming along now and then or we wouldn't have any novelties any more!

I see what you mean swords, that 'novelty' has a specific meaning in chess. Nevertheless, it sounds cloth-eared to me to put the two words together. A similar cloth-earedness is the phrase 'manual handling' ('manual' comes from the Latin word for 'hand'). I think 'recent novelties' would be more felicitous than 'new novelties'.
