If you can't go for the instant-win, but find it easy to beat, doesn't that mean it's more the fault of your opponent in the middle or endgame and/or your opponents playing the philidor are potentially just worse at chess than you -- as opposed to the opening itself being bad?
Also i think most of the lines you gave as examples are filled with black playing suboptimal moves. For example i'd probably start 1...d6 and transpose, but assuming I went with 1...e5 anyway, why 4.Qxd4 Nc6? Should be 4...Nf6.

That's an interesting point, one I had not considered.
4....Nf6 is a move I see rarely played. I just find the defense far too passive.
A good player, of course, could destroy me with the phildor defense.
