Does anyone know of anything decent written on this?  I've looked in wikipedia and actually haven't found anything.

Tony Kostens book is an oldy but one of my favourite opening books. Not the most up to date but written with great enthusiasim. I played the Philidor for a few years - its a good way of sidestepping whites ideas such as the Scotch, Ruy and the rest. A more modern book has been written by someone called something like "Baeur" (?), a French player

Andrew Martins DVD on "The Lion" covers the heavy Hannam variation which is a personal favourite

"A timid move.  Black assumes a defensive attitude at once.  On principle the move is wrong.  In the openings, whenever possible pieces should be moved in preference to pawns."

"The Philidor Files" by Christian Bauer is an excellent book on the philidor.

This is Jeremy Silmans review of the book:

Even for solid players, I don't recomend the philidor as white easily gets an edge and it's very difficult for black to get any kind of counterplay. I'd rather play the caro kann (which can have endgame counterplay). Because of that, books on the philidor as a repertoire are extremely rare.
