Queen’s Gambit books

What are the best books for an overview of the structures, plans and typical ideas arising from the various Queens’s Gambit openings (inc Slav, Semi-Slav, Tarrasch etc), beyond Grooten’s Understand Before Moving? I’ve got Rios’ structures but wonder if there’s something more focused on double queen pawn openings. Looking for something more explanatory than a standard opening book with reams of analysis. Thanks

Queen's gambit declined, by Matthew Sadler, is your friend!

This is THE book!

Thanks. And anything more oriented from White’s perspective?

More White oriented than the Sadler book?

You're probably going to get into repertoire or opening specific.

Yep - queens gambit by Sadler is an amazing book. Worth noting that it won’t cover the Slav or Semi Slav though - they’re outside the scope of a book on the QG really. However, Sadler has also done separate books on both of those as well, and they’re also superb.

Cool, thanks all. Sadler it is!

It's a book from 1974 but Samarian's book on QGD is what I studied. It includes Tarrasch, semi-Tarrasch and other deviations. Some lines are out of date, some have holes found by computers but I still find interesting ideas in it [that I always check now].

If you want annotated games look no further than logical chess move by move

Play the Queen’s Gambit by Marovic came highly recommended in another thread.

Strategic Chess by Edmar Mednis is a book of 30 annotated games in d-pawn openings, not just Queen’s Gambit, but comes consistently highly recommended.

Sadler’s book covers only the Queen’s Gambit Declined only, but is one of the best, if not the best, chess book in my opinion. Neil McDonald’s Starting Out: The Queen’s Gambit Declined is also good, but likewise covers only the QGD.

First Steps: The Queen’s Gambit by Andrew Martin might be a decent place to start. Haven’t heard anything good or bad about this book. Same with John Shaw’s Starting Out: The Queen’s Gambit.

Just was thinking that. Pretty good book.
