Could someone explain to me what the purpose/tactic is with the Queen's Gambit opening?

To answer you question : The purpose of the QG like any other sound opening is to preserve OR increase White's advantage of 0.30 (3/10ths of a pawn) and reach a playable middle-game, no matter how perfect Black's responses are.

Do you want to know how "different" it is from 1.e4 openings? That's a whole story waiting to explode on this thread :)

I suppose. I am very new to the game as far as playing it correctly and I am just using openings that are well known, but beyond that, I have no reason why a certain opening is good and how to play it.

Control of the center is one of the basic things you should achieve in the opening. In it's most basic form, 2.c4 aims to trade white's side-pawn for black's center pawn, thus increasing white's center control.

Good luck on your discovery of chess!

Since you're starting out, you might want to play openings that make you feel comfortable ... so shop around! They don't have to always be the most fashionable ones everyone else is playing :)

Q.Gambit:- White is trying to put pressure on the centre. Later, when we see where Black's King is going to live, we can formulate a plan of action.
