I am struggling against white: 1.d4 opening.

My last game against d4, i played as black and managed to win and afterwards i was looking up my defence tactics and found out that this is bad defence against white d4 opening(based on people comments and statistic). Can anybody help me and tell where i went wrong?

Thank you

Thank you

2..d5 is where you went wrong, but white started playing nonsense..

Your Knight on c6 is a horror!

White wasted two moves with h3/a3.

Agreed. 2...d5 is junk for thos who do not know the variations.

I have a bog standard formula against d4

1.d4 Nf6

If 2.c4 then 2..e5 in the first instant and 2...Nc6 in the second

If 2.Nf3 then 2...b5

Sometimes I try

1.d4 c5

2..b5? You really hate your pawns I see. :(

Both the slav and semi-slav are very solid defenses to the queens gambit. Also if your a 1.Nf6 type of guy, the nimzo indian and kings Indian defenses are also good. Any one of those would be better than the above example. Don't just memorize the moves, actually learn the ideas behind them.

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 d5

is terrible if after 3.cxd5 you take back with either the queen or the knight for similar reasons.

However, if you delay taking back until white has played Nc3 then you can play Nxd5 and transpose into the Neo-Grunfeld defense, which normally looks like:

in some order. There are a number of variations from this position and permutations before it, but this is what it looks like.

The alternative transposition mentioned beforehand can bait white into playing into the opening when they otherwise may have avoided it. It is a hypermodern opening, meaning it just applies the same principles of opening theory through the medium of somewhat novel tactics.

The usual move order if you want to go into a QGD is Nf6,e6,d5, or d5->e6->Nf6.
I suggest starting with Nf6 ->e6, then if Nc3 follow up by Bb4 leading into nimzo -which a solid opening - if Nf3 then d5 leading into a QGD

So the reply to d5 opening should be like this?

I don't have time to go into details but:

1. It wouldn't go exactly like that, look up Budapest Defence if you want details. Not really recommended until you've had experience in more normal stuff.

2. Dubious but playable. Not recommended.

3. Look up Samisch Nimzo Indian

4.That's your standard Queen's Gambit Declined. White's knight could just as easily be on c3 instead of f3 which allows him certain other options (and also allow Black other options.)
