Question about openings

In many of my games people do very common openings, and in most of these games it will come down to 1.e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. ...? My question is the move I make is the correct move.

Please respond on if you believe the move i make is the correct move, or if you would do something different. Don't be afraid to comment if you believe my move is the stupidest of all. :p

I don't know. I don't really play the Scotch at all, after reading in a book that White tends to advance too hastily in the center. I could be wrong, but I usually play either 3. Nc3 or 3. Bc4 in this position.

With careful play, it's probably a sound enough opening for White.

3. d4 is perfectly fine

3. d4 is perfectly fine. It is called the scotch game. Even Kasparov played it. In the position above, there is NO best move as it all depends on a players taste.

If you like sharp, almost gambit like positions where the unbalanceness of the position is esential, then the scotch is a fine game to play

3. d4 is perfectly fine! Just the good ol' Scotch Game.

3.Bb5, 3.d4, 3.Bc4, 3.Nc3 and 3.c3 are all fine moves in that position.
