Englund above stafford? What makes you say that?

I just think stafford is really bad.

No Portugese gambit?

What is the Two Knights Gambit? I can't even find it using a search engine.

I like the Marshall Gambit so I can avoid the Stonewall Semi-Slav but I'm surprised that you didn't add the Winawer Countergambit. Of course it's not the best opening to play but it does bring people out of their comfort zone while staying somewhat solid

Karpov lost to it playing Nc2 while Kasparov won with Bc2

only evans gambit is sound for me.

for some reason i thought the benko gambit would be first are there any reasons why?

Above master level it has been considered for the last 30 years that the Benkö, although mainly correct, gives White more chances for an advantage than the main 1. d4 openings and went regularly into some mini-crisis (first 5. f3, then 5. b6, fianchetto with Rb1 twenty years ago, lately 12. a4). The Benkö accepted is strategically dangerous for Black as allowing some queenside constructions by White leaves Black close to lost.

Meanwhile, spanish Marshall gambit and 4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5 Na5 6. Bb5+ c6 7. dxc6 bxc6 8. Be2 h6 in the Two Knights have been considered fully equal or close to it.

There is no such thing as the Two Knights Gambit.  It is the two knights defense.  4...d5 and 5...Na5 against 4.Ng5?! is not deemed a Gambit at that point.  It is merely the sacrifice of a pawn.

You lack the Scandinavian Gambit, which is sounder than the Icelandic Gambit, and White should not accept it and rather play the Panov-Botvinnik Attack (1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Nf6 3.c4 c6! And now 4.d4 cxd5 5.Nc3 is better than 4.dxc6?! Nxc6 =/+).

1 : Queen's Gambit (1.d4-d5 2.c4)

2 : [probably] Marshall Gambit from Spanish Openning because GMI seem to fear it and often play a h3 to avoid it.

3 : [?] Morra's Gambit (1.e4-c5 2.d4-cxd4 3.c3-dxc3) I don't really know but if we take the c3-pawn in practice it can be really insupportable for the player with black.

The Queen's Gambit and Morra Gambit do not apply to the topic.  He is referring to gambits where Black sacrifices the pawn, not White.

Very interesting list! Since the whole point of such lists is to have friendly arguments , usually over beer, I'll suggest that I would  reverse 1&2,  I'm uncertain about reversing 4&5. I'd put Icelandic above 8 and maybe even 7. Below #9 I wouldn't -play them in an OTB game twice vs the same (good) player. I dont know the names offhand but there are at least 2 in the Tarrasch defense that I think are playable [and have played them] and 2 early d5 pushes in the Sicilian that gives a pawn for a lot of activity that I'd put on the sound list too. (But these are deeper in the opening so maybe not eligible for this list.) Next, let's discuss who was the greatest athlete of all time! -Bill

As someone who plays 1Nf3 most the time ross gambit is total trash I assume they pre-move when people play it.

newbie4711

Okay, and where is the Traxler?surprise

aanval22

Really, the Albin is so low? I think it should be a bit higher. I play it OTB with pretty good success and my last USCF rating was 1944.

I lose to it online. Of course it's never because I messed up in the opening but some mistake in the middlegame
