scandinavian player wishing to change to 1...e5

Sort:
Conquistador

I have spent years playing the Scandinavian Defence and I have to conclude that while black's position is solid, I do not have as much play as I desire.  Against lower rated players it is great, but higher rated players make it difficult to acheive equality.  I know with best play black should equalize, but in practice this can be difficult when I am simply trying to hold my position until the endgame.

I have tried to switch to a few different openings.  CaroKann is similar to the Scandinavian, but I have difficulties developing with my queen's knight.

I do not like the sicilian, just does not fit.  Never have been much of a French player either except for the transpositions from the Scandinavian.

I have finally come to 1...e5.  I know the Italian game very well as I play this as white.  My problem has been with the Ruy Lopez.  I want to cement my reputation as a Conquistador, but this is not as easy as it seems.  The open variation has had poor results fro me.  What would the community recommend, the Siesta variation, Steinitz Deferred, Archangel, closed variation, or another variation I have not mentioned?

I posted a very similar question a few weeks back. I was not decided on 1...e5 as you were though. You might find the responses I got enlightening.

Thank you sir.

I just wanted to mention that modern theory doesn't leave black equal with perfect play in the Scandinavian.  Hence it's lack of presence at the top.  1. ... e5 is a very solid choice, and something many 1. e4 players do not look forward to facing (the closed ruy has become progressively harder to break down over time).

maybe try joining a few of the thematic tournaments? play four or five games as both white and black for each opening, and see how they fit with you.

I decided to try a new opening (king's indian) and joined a tourney, i've gotten an idea on the main idea's and what to watch for as both white and black in that opening. it's a great way to get a taste of an opening.

i will definitely be trying out a few more openings this way. :-)
