Scotch Opening question

I am new to the game, so excuse the amateur nature of this question. I am playing as White against a computer and this is how the game has gone so far: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 exd4 4. Nxd4 Nxd4 5. Qxd4 Qf3 6. e5 Qd8

My question is why would Black move 4... Nxd4 ? Then how does the following moves (5... Qf3 and 6... Qd8) make any sense at all? Am I missing something here?

Also, what would be the most logical move for White to make next? Basically we've exchanged a knight and a pawn for like and I have center control. I haven't ever seen this opening sequence before.

Huh, that's a weird sideline for a computer to play as black. I suspect you didn't have it set to max strength. The queen retreat looks like a waste of developing time for black. I think from here it's a matter of taste and room for improvisation. Personally, I'd prefer something like 7. Nc3 or Bf4 and enjoy the lead in development.

I'm no expert on the Scotch although I wish I was.  4... Nxd4 is fairly standard and you will very often see it but I have to admit that  5... Qf3 and 6... Qd8 are just plain weird. My thought is that you are playing the computer on blitz mode or a lower strength where weaker moves might be made.  But since these are free comments, you're getting what you paid for.

It's Chess Titans and from what I hear is a terrible waste, but it's what is available.

Why is 4... Nxd4 played in the Scotch? It seems inherently weak, giving white strong center control with absolutely no pay off in terms of materials.

I've always battled against the Scotch, lateley I've taken up 4 ... Qh4, and I must say, I quite like that.
