The Knight should go to b5, hence the reason that you normally see ...a6 played before ...e5, such as in the Najdorf or O'Kelly

Or better still, white plays Bb5+. Then, however black blocks, white will be able to establish the knight on f5. (A g6 fianchetto, kicking the knight, will make little sense with e5 played, and in any event, the knight can just retreat to e3 and white will completely dominate d5.)
