Sicilian Defence VS Scandinavian defence

Which one do you prefer. Books tell Sicilian is better. But I feel it's much more complicated. If I try Sicilian  the opponent almost always makes the stratery impossible to execute while Scandinavian is simple and can't blocked to use easily. Sure it makes having the queen in the middle but not much action has happened in the beginning and queen can move all direction with the position in the middle of the board.

Based on your games.  You dont know how to play either opening.  Stick with the basics at your level.

The Scandi is actually about the simplest opening to learn, is sound if not played too aggressively, and has a straightforward plan with uncomplicated theory.

But it’s boring for sure.

Look. i'll telll You a story of my short romance with scandinavian defence.

I wanted to learn something new for sake of variety, and chosed the scandinavian as i heard a lot of good about Jerzy Konikowski's book on it.

I have bought the book and it is good indeed - extremally detailed, mayby even too detalied - it could use less lines and a bit more explanation.

Reading it, i was really depressed about how great is the number of ways in which white can  utterly crush ( or just cripple for a won endgame) seemingly solid black's position. The fact that with very accurate play black can parry it all is hardly comforting.

The practical play was not encouraging either - as often happens on low levels, my opponents often played odd, clearly inferior moves, getting me of the book. But after this, my play was still very difficult, such players  overrun me a number of times. So apart from the  "theory of good moves", you have to learn the "theory of bad moves" too.

Scandinavian defence is a lot of theory learning just to stay afloat. Your time and effort will be much better invested in learning the sicilian. Scandinavian deserves it's bad reputation.

Scandinavian is easier to understand, for sure.

It's not the most sound, though, when you get to the upper levels.

At the engine level, for example, it's virtually a forced loss for Black.

I think it's a great defense to learn though, when one is still getting a feel for the game. There are a lot of positional and tactical ideas in it, that are very instructive to play through.

Eventually you might want to switch to the Sicilian, though, when you're a stronger player. But yes, the Sicilian is quite complex.

I'm 2200+ and I still find the Sicilian quite difficult.

thanx for all the helpfull replies. I am low ranked but it's getting better. I have tried Sicilian but each time white makes a move that was not regular. It makes me to use time to forget Sicilian for a moment or completely to react on the move white made.

Another benefit of scandinavian defence is it declined I move to Queen's gambit.(not sure it's the right name in that situation but you know how it looks.)

I am moving up in the ranking so yea it's the best to practice Sicilian more indeed. Scandinavian can be a back-up.
