generally white should only play Richter Rauzer if black plays 5...Nc6.
after white castles queenside, black can get a strong attack going aimed at the king so you require good defense but if you can make solid moves then white usually will have the advantage in mid/endgame.
Look for example here -->
if black gets queen on b6 and white delays castling then the game can turn into Poisoned Pawn variation, where with correct play white can win positionally:
Some one told me once that only after the classical variation with Nc6 the Bg5 move is named a Richter - Rauzer variation. And after an a6 move then you have a Najdorf on the board also with 6.Bg5 this is still the Najdorf. In the game so showed an example of the piosoned pawn variation.
Poisoned pawn variation is a branch of the Najdorf complex, where Black plays d6 and a6 (rather than d6 and Nc6, which is Richter-Rauzer).

Richter-Rauzer is currently much less popular than Najdorf.
Is that a matter of fashion only?
Richter-Rauzer is a complex stuff. the neo-modern variation of richter-rauzer is played by many GM games. if black does not play carefully it even standard strategy from eg f4 or g4 h4 push would be devastating that i had shown in the game. but how to defend it ? the normal looking b4 push from black to kick the knight from c3 is not enough for blacks kings safety. then what should black play ? the h5 is not enough to prevent g4 as white can play h3 and then g4.
what is the 'neomodern variation'?
possibly that bishop(DSB) retreats instead of taking the knight without giving a double pawn on black's kingside . may be known as neo-modern . (but i am not sure wait some expert to deal with it deeply. ).

i was wrong in this post :
a6 would be neo-modern early deviation. most modern games are higher level is in neo-modrn variation possibly.
