The Micklesson defence!!!!
SERIOUSLLY BOBBY!!!!!!!!
slav all the way
The Slav is the most solid. It doesn't create the potentially fatal black squared weaknesses inherent in the Stonewall. The Semi-Slav is pure chaos in the Meran and the Anti-Moscow lines. (The Botvinnik variation is on shaky ground recently; on Jan Smeets seems willing to give it a twirl these days.)
No surprises that the Slav was a perennial favourite of Vassily Smyslov.
glad to help.
There have been some good books on the Slav in recent years. "Play the Slav" by James Vigus (Everyman Chess 2008) offers up a sensibly motivated repertoire and a 30 page overview of typical structures and ideas which is very helpful, should you take up the Slav. As hinted, the annotated games of Smyslov are good to look at too in order to learn the opening.
round one of the opening wars. 3 solid defences enter the arena....The question is which is the toughest to play against. Has the best success rate and why you prefer it. The 3 openings that are going to go head to head are.... the slav, the semi slav and the stonewall attack.
