I was wondering if anyone on chess.com would be able to help me with a little problem. I am playing in a tournament at my school and there is an oppenent that plays the quick checkmate on everyone. I wanted to get him back with a taste of his own medicine but i was wondering if anyoen could give me ideas. He only knows a handlful and im guessing there are multiple ways to put your oppenent in checkmate with a few nukber of moves. Thank You chess.com! i play this person sometime with week. replys would be extremely helpful! asap!

There are no good ways to checkmate in the first five or ten moves.  Just play solid chess, and you will win.

why dont you try using his attempts to checkmate into an advantage? it usually leaves him in a bad position after you break his plan.

well you always have the scholars mate 1.e4 e5 2.Bc4 Bc5 3.Qh5 Nf6 4.Qxf7#

and the fools mate ( your opponent has to play really bad for this to work lol) 1.f3 e5 2.g4 Qh4#

your friend probably already knows these and does different variations of them, but they're easy to avoid

try to take out his 2 king side pawns over the bishop and knight then check mate with the queen

...if you don't plan on ever actually learning how to play chess.

thanks for the replys, and ya i can actually play chess silentfilmstar. thanks for your words of wisdom haha. but ya i just want to get back with some of his own medicine cause i know that would make him more upset than anything. but i will give it a shot bradlpowe and DaPharaoh! thanks for the comments!

If you want to get him back, teach the ones that are getting mated how to avoid the quick mates. Obviousely is playing playing individuals who are new to chess to show off the fools mate.

i agree
cheesehat

Lol this is stupid but it MAY work. (doubt it)

1. e4 c5  2. Nf3 b6 (some variation of sicilian, not a random move)  3. Ne5 ?! f6 ??

4. Qh5+ g6  5. Nxg6 hxg6  6. Qxg6++

Or if he doesn't play hxg6, you can play Nxh8++

But don't try cheat traps. They ain't good for you.

I second that. Why play him at his own game? A win is a win, regardless of how long or short the game is. Just play solid chess and have fun.

There are no such things as free lunch, cheap tricks and unescapable quick checkmates, because eventually somebody pays for them. I personally consider the slow and inevitable victory sweeter ;)
danielclayton534
ya i agree slow and inevitable victor is definetly sweeter! but ya im just toying with ideas for my game tomorow morning. Its the big game of the season and i want to finish strong! thanks again for all the comments guys!

Usually when someone is trying for a quick fool's mate or similar they leave themselves exposed to attack by minor pieces.  You can develop your pieces while he's getting his queen chased around the board.

I disagree about not learning the traps.  Traps are good to know.  It's pretty easy for highly rated players to go on about fundamentals and learning end game tactics, but I found it annoying losing to people who had studied openings.  It's more than a little disheartening to be beaten before you even enter the middle game much less the end game.

Learn the opening traps, and you'll learn how to avoid opening blunders as well as how to exploit your opponents mistakes.

Look up these traps:

Legal's mate

opening traps is nothing you need to learn. Just look at the board and avoid making losing moves. If you play solid chess against someone that tries to play a quick mate trap your position is going to be alot better when entering the middle game.

honestly, there is nothing better than a surprise checkmate.  especially when the just took the piece I sac'd to get to it and they act like they need to show me how to play chess or something.

I once let a guy tell me the whole speech on "how many points each piece was worth" before making the move.  priceless.

If he plays 1.e4 e4 2.Qh5 the best medicine is rapid and solid development! refute all his traps and crush him! Laughing

If he plays 1. e4 e5 2. Qh5, play 2... Nc6. After 3. Bc4, play 3... g6. He has to retreat his queen or have it chased around the board.
