Solidness of the Caro Kann

Hi all,

Would the Caro Kann be a solid opening to play in correspondence chess? Or can it be refuted? I'm asking this because I need a solid response for e4 in CC chess because both sides have a lot of time to research the openings.

Another question: after e4, c6, is it always good to move ahead with d5 regardless of what white plays? Can the ck be played against any e4 opening?

Thanks

The Caro Kann is a very solid and rather quiet opening. Look at the matches played with the Caro-Kann and the players that played it at http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessopening?eco=B10. If those players pick this opening, then most certainly it's fit for you. The opening has not been refuted. As to the d5 move: try not to pin yourself onto a move like that. Just see what your opponent plays and see how you can best react to that. Stick to the opening principles (castling, focus on the center, develop your pieces coherently etc) and you'll be fine.
