You must have run across the term "Ruy Lopez." It's the same opening. The above post meant to say the most common response is 3...a6, the Morphy Defense.

The Ruy is anything but a boring opening. There's a reason its often referred to as "the open game", while even the sicilian is considered "semi-open".
