This is called the Ampel Variation: Is it the oddest opening you have ever saw?

KillaBeez
Why did they even take the time to name it?
neneko

If you want to see some more unorthodox rook moves in the Opening, go to my forum (In my profile) on "Unorthodox Chess Openings #1, Strange Rook Moves". There I put the Ampel and several other odd openings. I will also make a forum on Strange King Moves in the near future.

What part of this thread indicates anyone is interested in more of these openings except to learn how NOT to post about ridiculous openings.

Actually it's called "Barnes Opening: Hammerschlag VARIATION" ;)

mcfischer

how about this- strangest looking opening that is actually a good opening? mainline caro-kann maybe

I would say the Bongcloud Attack is the strangest opening.  It goes directly against the basic principle of "preserve your King, ensure his safety until the most dangerous pieces are off the board".

As far as serious (serious at one time) openings go, the Steinitz Gambit of the Vienna Game is a strange one:

Here is a link to one of Steinitz own games in the line against a strong opponent: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1001807
