Oh i forgot to mention Aronian! as well.
Super GM's who play 1...e5 a lot?

Does the sicilian really over power 1...e5 that much? i mean tal and karjakin play the sicilian more then they do e5 and so do the rest of the gm's except carlsen and even he plays the sicilian often

Stating the obvious for most but for those that don't know...
Green = win % for white
Grey = draw %
Red = win % for black

All that really comes to mind is well....carlsen. lol. everyone else is either a french or sicilian addict but rarely use 1...e5. Im really trying tos tudy it but having a ahrd time finding appropriate gm's who use it as their main weapon to fight for a win as black besides carlsen. Is it okay if i study spassky?
No. It is not OK if you study Spassky.

Adams is a good place to look. Also, you could learn a lot from Karpov's games i guess.

I think they almost all do. I don't have the stats to back it up but my impression is that 1... e5 is currently the most popular response to 1. e4 at the super GM level. The Berlin is all the rage, Marshal/anti-Marshal are also very fashionable as is Petrof but many other variants are played as well. In general 1... e5 is considered very reliable.
Of course, Super GM's when playing against an equal opponent are usually very happy to draw with black so it may not be quite as easy to find games where they are actually playing for the win from the start.

I checked on Shakaali's hypothesis about 1...e5 being most popular at the super-GM level and was surprised to find that to be true. 1...e5 was more popular against 1.e4 than 1...c5 in games between two super-GMs (2700+).
In Mega Database 2012, for games played in 2012 between two 2700+ players (of which there 1104 games in total), there were 433 1.e4 games (slightly more than the 402 1.d4 games, which was another surprise). The four most popular responses were:
- 1...e5 (195 games)
- 1...c5 (143 games)
- 1...e6 (45 games)
- 1...c6 (22 games)
Curiously, though, in all games involving at least one +2700 player (above games and games where one player was less than 2700), then the Sicilian is slightly more popular. In that case, of 3539 games in total, there were 1384 1.e4 games, of which 506 were 1...c5 games, and 500 were 1...e5 games. This could be true because 2700+ players when playing Black against weaker opponents choose 1...c5 more frequently, or it could be that the weaker players more frequently play 1...c5 when playing Black against 2700+ players. I don't see how to distinguish between these two cases using the Chessbase search features.

There have been some excellent points made already. The last two world champions both used 1.e4 e5 as Black in critical games. Kramnik's Berlin Wall was one of the main reasons he became the World champion in 2000 and Anand has used the same defense repeatedly in the last few years too!
Here's just one example.

Other 1...e5 players:
1) Ivan Sokolov (Various)
2) Oleg Romanishin (Chigorin)
3) Boris Spassky (Breyer)
4) Svetozar Gligoric (Smyslov)
5) Anatoly Karpov (Zaitsev as I seem to recall)
6) Victor Korchnoi (Open)
7) Vladimir Kramnik (Berlin)
GM's somethimes play e4-e5, but they almost always plays the Ruy lopez.
(And that going to be mainly a closed game)

Hey guys, which one is more solid/safe, the Berlin or Petrov?
That's the wrong question to ask.
The question you should ask is,
Do I have the endgame technique to win by playing these positions?
If you are only trying to play solidly two things will happen:
- You will lose a huge number of games without understanding why you lost.
- You will lose interest in chess itself.
I've seen quite a few chess players slowly give up the game after taking up openings such as the Caro-Kann or the Berlin because they read it was "solid". It won't happen overnight, but I really believe there's a strong correlation between amateurs who want only to play "solid" chess and those who also give up this great game.
Don't stifle your creativity. The reason to play chess is to have fun!
