The English - 1.c4 c6

I can't seem to find anything sound as white against1. ...c6 when I play the english. any ideas?

In this defense, Black may try to bring you into one of the various Slavic Defenses, and it is your choice if you wish to oblige with his plan or not. Otherwise, you must have a plan against 2...d5 which may follow shortly. Assuming that you do not wish to stray from the English, you should play one of the following:

1. c4 c6 2. Nf3 d5 3. e3 (g3 and b3 are also alternatives) 3...Nf6 4. Nc3 e6 (and White is fine)

1. c4 c6 2. Nc6 d5 3. e3 Nf6 4. Nf3 e6 (transposing to the position above).

Although there are deviations, you will have to be comfortable playing against Black’s Slav-like pawn structure. You may wish to play b6, Qc2, and Bb2 in some order as the game progresses.

You basically have 3 main options, all of which have numerous books on them.

 

A) follow the lines given in post 2.  This is covered in books on the Reti Opening

B) play 2.d4 and you will end up in a Slav defense after 2...d5.  Numerous books cover this.

C) play 2.e4, and after 2...d5 3.exd5 cxd4 4.d4, you have the Panov-Botvinnik attack, which there is a full book for White in the move by move series and many Caro-Kann books cover it too.
