The Hippo Defense

I’ve been playing the hippo defense a bit recently and I’m finding it hard to find any online resources to help me improve in it, if anyone knows that would be greatly appreciated

Bruh...we just had a forum on this...Btw don’t play Hippo cause White gets easy edge and your only chance to win is if they overextend

Thank you, I actually was asking for resources though

Ya I play hippo too and there isn’t a lot of resources for it. I actually bought a book on the hippo defense but it is complete rubbish. Another annoying thing is the chess community completely hates the hippopotamus defense, so if you ever put yourself out there using the hippo- there will be backlash

The reason why I like the hippo is because it is anti-theory, which is honestly useless at my level...But I will get better and it will take its effect. It is noted to be called the “universal defense”, which I agree to but some people are over critical of the idea. Of course no opening is perfect or universal, what do you expect...

If it’s good enough beating world champion magnus carlsen, it sure is good enough for me.

Christian Bauer has a section on the hippo in his 1.b6 book, that may help

I meant that it would be a good idea to get resources on something better.

While the Hippo is not great, a strong player will occasionally overextend a bit too much and lose. The Hippo only appears in the games of Masters when someone has Black and NEEDS a win because the Hippo keeps pieces on the board and White can’t force a draw.

or when they freaking feel like it!

The HIPPO is a good defense specially in super fast time control. Just shuffle pieces don't advance a pawn or minor piece beyond 6th rank and white usually runs out of time.

an ACTUAL BOOK here. I hope this helps... I remember seeing it when searching for "Knight on the Left"

That’s the one I have, it’s rubbish unless if you can study games we’ll

Well
RiverRat8585

you must not have a life if you seriously just said hippo defense.

peterbrandt1000
Sorry river rat, but there is no river rat defense so you have to settle for this
BlindThief

The river rat defense is going all in on a flush draw, and winning because of dumb luck. However, it’s exclusive to Hold’em

You can order the book "The Modern Tiger", but also keep in mind the hippo cannot be used against everything.

If I remember right, it is where white plays 1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.Nc3 d6 4.Nf3 a6 5.a4, specifically, where it advertises the hippo and covers a full chapter on it.

The hippo against lines with f4 are terrible for Black.

You can find "The Modern Tiger" at qualitychess.co.uk, amazon, or your local online chess shop.

Obviously any opening isn’t perfect
