The worst opening in chess

ChessDayDreamer

Many beginners like to play the following opening: e4 e5 Nf3 f6 without knowing how bad it is. After playing f6 they fall into a simple (yet powerful) trap and lose the game. If you are a beginner you should take a look at the following game, and learn how NOT to play chess.

cedula1066

Damiano defense. After of Cxe5, ..Qe7, recovers the pawn. There is a draw in a game of Fisher vs nn 1/2-1/2.

i realize I'm being slightly hypocritical here, but i don't think that 982 rated players have much room to talk about "beginners" or "how not to play chess"

Just my two cents

dpnorman

You could very easily and reasonably argue that 3. Bc4 is stronger than 3. Nxe5.

Actually I am rated 1563. Take a look at my profile.

When black plays Qe7, I usually react like this:

The kingside of the black is now weakened and the black queen is in the centre so white can chase it with Nc3. Black loses time and is behind in development.

well it is better than fxe5..

Yep. fxe5 is a disaster move for black.

Usually? How many times do you get to face the Damiano lol. Can't remember the last time I had to face it.

Well, Sometimes I play blitz games with players rated under 1000, and I noticed that many of them play the Damiano opening. When I play standard games against much stronger players (rated 1500-1600) I don't see this opening at all. I guess this opening is used mostly by beginners...

Fischer got drawn when his opponent played Damiano

What a combination! I was about to make a post about how bad Damiano Defense is, but before, for curiosity, I read this... and I find that someone was already talking of it!

Anyway Damiano is really bad, bad, bad, but I see often people playing it... on tematic tournaments the results are the following:

55 % - White

4 % - Draw

41% - Black

Don't play Damiano's Defence!

giancz91

@skotheim2 - Fischer played bad that one.

Blackfoxx

My guess would be the Englund Gambit

Damiano is bad indeed. The funny thing about Damiano is that the guy who invented it back in the 16th century said that it sucked

After 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 f6 3 Nxe5 Qe7, White wins the rook with 4 Qh5+ and if 5...g6 then 6 Nxg6 hxg6 7 Qxh8 and 5...Kd8 is met by 6 Ng6 hxg6 7 Qxh8. I hope this helped.

Ahahah yeah, I know! He said it was weak and someone gave that opening his name LOL!!!

@ cnwk

After 5 Nxg6 not hxg6 from Black but Qxe4+ followed by Qxg6
