What are your thoughts on this? Is it sound?

Love this opening this is actually the exact opening i play every game vs queens gambit its my opening vs black

would recommend

king5minblitz119147

it is. i would prefer 4..nbd7 just to cut bxf6 lines while allowing others that may or may not be better. also you have to play with hanging pawns in some lines.

TwoMove

Sokolov's "Winning chess middlegames" has a lot of annotated games, and explanations. A small bias to the white side particularly Karpov's games, but also shows nice ideas for black particularly Short's games.

I think the attacking potential in the typical hanging pawn positions make them a lot easier for the black side to play, particularly at lower levels of play. Personally much prefer the black positions after BxN, and c4xd5 e6xd5 trying to fix the pawn structure, the two bishops have plenty of potential.

Thanks alot lud, king, pfren and twomove. I guess I'll look into the the tartakower  and learn more about the hanging pawns structure. It seems interesting with some dynamic play in action grin.png

The Tarkatower is completely sound, yes.

You could also play 7...Nbd7 instead of 7...b6, often followed by ...c6, to handle things in a Semi-Slavic manner.

But that's more a matter of personal taste, and involves slightly different positional goals.

Here's a nice Tartakower game from the 1972 Fischer-Spassky World Championship Match. Here's link to the annotations by some guy named Mikhail Tan, who was also a fairly good player himself:

thanks alot stil1 and intoxicated for that annoted game

It's completely sound. I believe once you play bb7 there's possibilities of opening the bishop with dxc4 and then playing in Queen's Indian style with ne4 but I could be wrong

This is one of the best defences against 1.d4 (can also be used for 1.c4 and 1.Nf3) which requires good positional understanding of a couple of strategic motifs, while it is not theory-heavy.

YESSS I’m not the only one who thinks its a good defense

ConfusedGhoul

You can play it but you have to be ok with a draw as your setup is going to be solid but not extremely challenging for White

As a historical note, Fischer played a magnificent game against Spassky in 1972, but that was almost 50 years ago. There have been improvements for both sides! Check out the game Timman - Geller for a brilliant improvement for Black

If you want a good introduction to learn to play the Tartakower see the following books:

(1) Opening Systems for Competitive Chess Players by John Hall (1994). The Tartakower is covered in Pages 69 to 113.

(2) Action Chess - Purdy’s 24 Hours Opening Repertoire by C.J.S. Purdy (2000). The Tartakower is covered in Pages 25 to 54.

These oldies, but goodies, are available in PDF format from scribe.com
