p.s. is this already theory?

TheOldReb

You think 2... Nc6 is uncommon in the sicilian ?

KWF

If he had played 8...Qc4, what would you have replied? I think the queen can escape there, in which case there was nothing wrong with taking the rook.

TheOldReb

its second in popularity after 2... d6 but my DB shows over 109,000 games played with 2.... Nc6 with  e6, g6 and a6 next in popularity....

I don't know much about the openings...but presumably if 4... Qb6 is an accepted move (and somehow I associate Benko with it), then obviously sacking the pawn must've been considered.

Your rook sac lines are interesting...but aar Black seems to have a good game after 6... bc.

There is a line in the sozin with an early Qb6 made popular by Benko.

I agree black seems fine after 6... bc

TheOldReb

Hmmmm  6... bc 7 Bd4 and now ? Surprised

TheOldReb

7 ... Qb4 +  .... silly me

Bxc4

to everyone else; Yup, can't find a comfortable way for white to eek an advantage after 6..bc 7..Qb4+. Black has equalised or better.

plus, the more I analyse the 8...Qe6 line, the more drawish it looks.

turn

N.IC.E. NICE. :)

I often trap the queen when the opponent makes these type of mistakeTongue out

But,if 6...dxc6, u may lose the game:)

YuvalW

seeing in the database that Kasparov and Kramnik played 4...Qb6 and yet there were only 29 games in the variation 5.Bd3 we have to assume it's bad..

rybka gives black an advantage after 6...bxc6

for accepting the rook secrifice Rybka gives a very interesting and unclear variation:
