Vienna Game trap

I forget what book i read this in, but here is an interesting trap that can arise from the Vienna Game

Thats true, of course black is not obligated to fall into the trap, however after 7...h6 i still like  the position for white more, to avoid this trap as black i might play 6... Nc6 instead.  Anywho... I just thought it was a cool little trap.

5 .... Nf6 leaves black a piece up! I can't think what book you read this in either!
well_hung_pawn
5...Nc6 is not plausible since the black king is in check and must move, black cannot keep the extra piece.

Read carefully what I wrote.... Nf6!!

I believe most correct is q-h5 after nxe4(I just got a christmas present :D)

Yes 5 Qh5 is much better, but after 5 Qf3+ (the text move, apparently) white is lost due to 5.... Nf6.

Sorry, i didn't see that you had written Nf6, that is an excellent move in this posistion, i accidently put in the wrong move order, it should be like this...

The moves are trasposed, 5. Nxe4 d5 6. Qf3+, it is a classic trap in this openning.

Now that's what I call a trap! Thanks for sharing.

7...Qxg5?, a very greedy blunder, why not 7...Qd7.  This position seems to give black a bit of an edge.

Yes, but Nxe4 ? Was this a reasonable move?
well_hung_pawn

Indeed 7...Qxg5 is a blunder since it leads to mate for white, black can avoid being mated of course, however i think a lot of players without putting to much thought into it will take the knight that has been left seemingly en prise.  After 7...Qd7 though i would still prefer whites position simply because blacks Queen is stuck on guard duty and whites king is nice and safe, while one mistep from black...well we've seen how that turns out.

Nxe4 is a reasonable move, it is mainline Vienna game, if white Nxe4, then black plays d5 forking the knight and bishop

I meant 4.  q-h5 instead of bxf7

Good to look at these opening trap ideas once in a while to remind those of us who are prone to falling into such pits now and then!  Thanks
