1.b3 (Nimzowitsch-Larsen Attack, or Nimzo-Larsen Attack for short) is a perfectly playable hypermodern opening. Black has a lot of freedom (white is declaring his first two moves as 1.b3 and 2.Bb2, so black can start with e5/d5/Nf6 etc.) and usually can maintain the initiative, but should be cautious as not to create a too broad pawn center. example startup lines are:
1.b3 e5 2.Bb2 Nc6 3.e3 Nf6/d5
1.b3 d5 2.Bb2 c5/Nf6 3.e3 Bf5/g6
1.b3 Nf6 2.Bb2 g6 3.e4 d6
etc.
I'm in the mood to try something different as white, and the 1 b3 opening has caught my eye. I have found info on the critical line, but since I expect to see the critical line one time in twenty at my level, I'm wondering what to expect. I like the Modern and am familiar with many of the motifs, but of course things will be rather different when it is the kingside pawns that are doing the undermining, so I doubt that a lot of the Modern ideas will be easily applicable.
Anyone have experience with this move?
