What do I do against Caro-Kann pawn structures?

Sort:

Every time I play against a caro-kann pawn formation I literally have no idea what to do. Should I double rooks on the e-file? Should I try my luck on a kingside attack? Should I push pawns on the queenside? For some reason NONE of those ideas really work out, while black can develop against the d-file and play c5 or e5 at leisure.

An example:

What am I supposed to do? In almost every caro game I win because of some stupid blunder black makes. Honestly I'm just at a loss as for what to do in those positions.

Any ideas would be appreciated, especially if they come from caro-kann players. Thanks!

Play 1.Nf3. Your welcome, you don’t have to thank me. No really stop. Stop thanking me. I’m happy to spread my wisdom

1. weird cc glitch, can't see the game

2. i'm not like good at opening stuff but i just usually push d4 and c4 and just improve the position of my pieces really

I mainly play the two knights, just like you. I have a different move order which is more attacking.

I don’t really want to admit it...

but as you live in alabama, I will reveal it.

I hate whenever white gets an active queen, and makes a strong attack earlier in the game, before I develop my kingside bishop and knights...

nice, but what happens if black plays Nf6 immediately and not Nd7?

But it’s my opinion, and might not be the same for everyone.

I also hate when my oppos trade everything and outplay me with their pawn on d4, but that’s not too relevant

Here are a few common attacking patterns for that structure. They might come in handy.

Also d4 isn't very challenging. So you can play, for example:

Also I started having more success and fun against the caro with a more mainsteam line

OP Caro trap that NOBLE fell for!

Of course move order may be different, and it might not work with 1. Nc3, but you get the idea.
