I'm just curious

The Pirc is a good defence, played at master / Grandmaster level, so it has to be good, right?Laughing I need to learn it myself... Curse you French defence, and all your fun playability!!

kingforce

too passive, give white too many options, i personally don't like it,

I now play the Pirc almost exclusively. It is a fun opening for Black as there is lots of play. There are several lines that need to be memorized but most of the opening is fairly intuitive. I have not yet played it against any 2400+ players but have played it against many 2200 or players in correspondence and blitz. Black has to have the right personality to play the Pirc--there is an element of risk as well as understanding how to attack an extended center and use of Knights with central squares (usually c5 and e5) and time the right pawn breaks.

cool thanks guys

The Pirc is an interesting defense for Black. It is solid, but somewhat cramped. I believe that it scores quite well at master level, and I have used it myself in a few OTB games. It is quite obviously hypermodern, but scores better than some other defenses.

Check out James Vargas's book on the Pirc Opening. Excellent book.

I play it all the time.  Very powerful.

I like it but I always strike the center with d6 followed by c5 which is practically the same as the sicilian, but instead your not preventing white from playing d4, his d4 pawn is already there, sometimes this causes problems for me because he simply pushes it forwards and cramps my position

I play the Pirc/Modern complex. One advantage is that as black I have an opening for most any white move. The disadvantage is that when played vs. a skillful opponent one lacks the oomph of many openings. Also, there is a certain lack of structural solidity one gets from the French or the Caro.

I don't play the pirc as black but I have played against it. I dont' think it's quite as strong as 1...e5, the sicilian, the french or the caro kann, but it's still very solid. I often find myself in what  I feel is a better position but can't find away to convert it into a win when playing against the pirc. So I would say it's playable at most levels of chess and definitely at my level, so if you understand the idea's behind it you it should suit you pretty well.
