what is the best defense (opening) with the black?

eu particularmente gosto de sciciliana, defesa pirc também.

White has several first move options:

Nf3, d4, e4 and c4 being the most common and for good reason. And each has openings that are playable against them.

I think you need to be more specific. Or which 2 of the 4 you wish us to respond to here. Which i have to take as what openings you want to know are good against:   1. e4  and 1. d4

royalbishop

Against 1. e4 i say against a strong opponent i play Sicilian. Now for 1 d4 i say the KID. It is easy to pick up with many variations. Fun to play.

If you are looking for a universal setup independent of white's moves I suggest Pirc(1. ... d6). Pirc is not just universal, but also gives enough chances if played correctly.

royalbishop

Yeah it also also allows white several options. Which would require time studying to use it properly. Way more time spent learning it than most defenses.

matematicaxadre

against d4 and e4?

kikvors

All the big, well-know openings are good. One isn't better than the other, they're just different.

royalbishop

There are several well known club openings that are not playable at higher levels. And if faced against an opponent that knows how to beat them easily  (they do not have to be a titled player) your going to most likely not have good results.

Hey if the top GM's do not want to use it that goes same for me also. Popular or not popular. But then on the other hand it could be an unpopulat openning rarely played and chance that your opponent is not famaliar with it and might put them in chaos. I have done this with good results many times but it requires you know it in out.

Against 1.c4 try the English Defence. You can also join our group English Defence where we study the opening together.Laughing

How's that different than the Queen's Indian?

Basically just the move order. But of course since the move order is different, it may transpose into line the other can not.

wiebelenstra

You can always play as black the moves 1.--g6, 2.--Lg7 3.-- c5.

That give you always active play against whatshowever an opening.

xxvalakixx

Well, in every opening white has the initiative, so it depends on what do you like to play.
Against e4:
There are a lot of moves against it. 1..e5 is a good move for example. The only problem with e4-e5 is that you have to be prepared for gambits, for example scotch gambit, king's gambit, (sometimes evan's gambit) and so on. But this is a good opening.
The other good move is 1..c5, the sicilian defense. The only problem with it is that, white can play closed variations, which you wont like if you prefer the sicilian defense.
c6 and e6 caro-kann defense and french defense: They are good if you want closed, strategical positions.
And of course there is 1. d6, which is the pirc defense, it is similar to KID, the difference is that in the pirc white cant play c4.
These are the main openings, against e4 which are good.

Against d4: Well, here there a lot of good openings, QGA, QGD, slav, and the indian defenses, and grunfeld defense. So you should only pick up one of these, there are a lot of theory behind these openings, so it is easier to understand one opening perfectly, than to play more not so well.
Against c4: You may play the indian defenses (mainly KID) against it, or you can transpose it into QGD/QGA with 1...e6.
Nf3: This is going to transpose into other openings.
