What is the best move against d4?

Probably g6 2. e4 bg7... at least if you go by stats, but it really depends on how good you are at a paticular opening... i just play d5 like the 900 elo pleb i am

SamuelAjedrez95

d5 leading to:

  • Queen's Gambit Declined
  • Queen's Gambit Accepted
  • Tarrasch Defence
  • Slav
  • Semi-Slav

Nf6 leading to:

  • Nimzo-Indian
  • Queen's Indian
  • Bogo-Indian
  • King's Indian
  • Grünfeld
  • Benoni

These are the most respected defences against d4. Which defence is better is a topic for debate and more often a personal choice.

Against a queens gambit you can try a albin counter gambit. And if they try to go into a London I like respond d4 and when they bring that Bishop or knight out I hit ‘em with c4. Kinda like a queens gambit for black. Point is to not let them have the game they are used to

I’ve found the Slav to be relatively forgiving and flexible. Play anything other than the Marshall.

1... Nf6,  1... g6, 1... e6, 1... c6, 1... d5, and 1... f5. Any of them work. I'd recommend 1... d5 to U1100s and 1... Nf6 or 1... g6 to 1100+. Caro-Kann players should try c6 and learn the Slav, French players should try e6 and learn the QGD, and the Dutch is a standalone with a lot of imbalance if you want to play for a win, not a draw.

I love playing the Fajarowicz Gambit.

Well ive beaten a fair few high rated players with this line and it's pretty fun as well.
Pirc is also a good opening for Black.

Congrats on the victories. It's still not a good opening though. Hikaru claims that it's technically forced losing. Budapest Gambit with Ng4 is ok but still nowhere near as good as the other sound options.

You would do much better with one of the sound choices.

Pirc is decent for black. It's a bit risky though. Kind of like KID but KID is much more respectable and dangerous for white. Against e4, e5 and c5 are much better. e6 and c6 are also very good.

The thing is though Hikaru was doing a vid with Levy he said Englund Gambit was a legit opening. Which if I’m honest I think is total crap.

I'll have to watch the video again. I don't like listening to Levy speak that much though tbh lol.

Englund Gambit and Fajarowicz Gambit are both equally terrible either way.

I like d5 because I always go for Slav or semi Slav.

Wow... OP

Only GMs must be able to play such a move.

SamuelAjedrez95

It isn't as good as 1. d4 Qxh1 though.
