What is the state of the dragon in top level play?

What is the latest theory? Any Dragon books you can recommend?I need something that is up to date with the latest theory

Top players (e.g. Carlsen) play it occassionally, so its state is pretty good.

I would subscribe to the Dragon section of Chess Publishing. Monthly updates with theoretically relevant analyzed games, and if you subscribe you have immediate access to all the updates going back to 1999. Beats any book.

"Chess Openings for Black, Explained," by Lev Alburt, Roman Dzindzichashvili and Eugene Perelshteyn recommends the Accelerated and HyperAccelerated dragon against e4. I have the book, use and study it often and find it very useful. As for the regular Dragon, especially vs. the Yugoslav attack, anything by Chris Ward is good. I have a book and video by Ward which are very good (and highly entertaining) but they are out of print. Good luck. It takes brass cojones to play the Dragon but it's a lot of fun, IMO.

I like playing the White side of the Dragon, actually. I have never used the Sicilian as Black.

For actual Dragon theory, instead of Accelerated stuff, I think Edward Dearing's book is still regarded at the best in print, although it's gotten hard to find, and isn't completely up to date.

For more strategical and planning stuff, the chapter in Soltis's Pawn Structure Chess is good.  And Soltis was a Dragoneer, so he knew what he was about.

But for top choice, I second the recommendation to subscribe to the Dragon section of chesspub.

Yes, accelerated dragon is preferable imo. I like White position in the Dragon. In Accelerated Dragon I hate the fact that Black can easily achieve a draw. Most strong player may prefer the Maroczy Bind against the Accelerated Dragon, but I don't like playing such position. I prefer to play positions of the mainline but not the Maroczy. May be I need to adapt and try to love the Maroczy position anyway.

The Dragon has the disadvantage that the d-5 sqaure, to quote Swedish GM Ulf Anderssen is too weak.

The Accelerated dragon is good
